UAE AI adoption hits 72% as AWS pours in $5.5bn

UAE AI adoption 72%

If you run a business in the UAE, chances are your competitors are already using AI. A new report shows that 72 per cent of UAE businesses have now adopted artificial intelligence, up sharply from 53 per cent just a year ago, and Amazon Web Services is backing that momentum with a massive new investment.

AWS says it will pour up to AED20.1bn, or roughly $5.47bn, into its AWS Middle East (UAE) Region through 2037. That’s not a small bet. The company estimates the investment will add AED41bn, around $11.16bn, to the UAE’s GDP over time. For a country that has made AI a central pillar of its economic diversification plan, this is the kind of number that turns heads.

Why UAE businesses are racing to adopt AI

The jump from 53 per cent to 72 per cent adoption in just one year is a 36 per cent year-on-year growth rate. That’s according to the Unlocking the UAE’s AI Potential 2026 report, put together by research firm Strand Partners in partnership with the UAE Artificial Intelligence Office and AWS. Almost three-quarters of the businesses covered in the research are now officially using AI in some form.

It’s not just about ticking a box either. The same research found that 85 per cent of companies already using AI say the technology has sped up digital transformation across their organisations. In other words, once a business starts using AI, it tends to lean in harder, not pull back.

Dr. Abdelrahman Al Mahmoud, Director at the UAE Artificial Intelligence Office, says the goal has always been bigger than just chasing a trend. “The UAE has long recognised AI as a key driver of economic growth, better services and future competitiveness,” he said. “Our focus is on creating the right environment for organisations to innovate, scale new solutions and translate the potential of AI into meaningful outcomes for society.”

Some familiar names are already deep into this shift. Property Finder, Virgin Mobile UAE, The ENTERTAINER and Careem are all named in the report as companies using AWS cloud and generative AI tools to run parts of their operations. If you’ve booked a ride, browsed property listings or used a discount app in the UAE recently, there’s a decent chance AI was quietly working in the background.

What AWS’s $5.5bn bet means for Dubai and Abu Dhabi

AWS committing up to $5.47bn through 2037 isn’t just a headline figure. It signals long-term confidence in the UAE as a regional tech and cloud hub, not a short-term play. The AED41bn GDP contribution AWS is projecting suggests the company expects this investment to ripple outward, creating jobs, supporting local tech firms, and strengthening the digital infrastructure that other industries rely on, from banking to logistics to retail.

This fits into a broader pattern playing out across the Gulf. Business leaders in the region have been shifting their focus toward technology and AI as part of national diversification strategies, often moving faster than their counterparts in other parts of the world. For companies based in the UAE or looking to expand here, that means the competitive bar is rising. Adopting AI is no longer a nice-to-have experiment; it’s becoming standard practice across sectors.

For small and mid-sized businesses watching from the sidelines, these numbers matter. When nearly three in four companies are already using AI, waiting too long to adopt similar tools could mean falling behind on efficiency, customer service or cost savings. The UAE government and companies like AWS are clearly betting that AI adoption will keep climbing, and they’re putting real money behind that bet.

What to watch next is whether this adoption rate keeps climbing at the same pace, and how quickly AWS’s infrastructure investment translates into visible changes for UAE businesses and consumers. With AI adoption already outpacing last year’s numbers by a wide margin, the UAE’s push to become a regional AI hub looks set to continue, backed by both government policy and serious private capital.
