Reports Point to Potential Restructuring of PIF’s Gaming Holdings

PIF Savvy Games Group EA restructuring

Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) is reportedly weighing a plan to bring Electronic Arts under the umbrella of Savvy Games Group, its dedicated gaming investment arm, according to a report from Saudi Arabia’s PIF reportedly considering to combine EA with Savvy Games Group. The report does not specify a timeline, deal structure, or valuation for any such move, and neither PIF, Savvy Games Group, nor Electronic Arts has issued a public statement confirming or denying the discussions.

PIF has held a stake in EA, the publisher behind titles such as FIFA/EA Sports FC, Apex Legends and The Sims, for several years as part of a broader strategy to build exposure across the global games industry. Savvy Games Group was established by PIF specifically to consolidate the kingdom’s ambitions in gaming and esports, and it has previously acquired stakes in and full ownership of several international studios and publishers as part of that mandate. Combining EA’s operations with Savvy would mark a significant escalation of that strategy, folding one of the industry’s largest Western publishers directly into a Saudi-controlled corporate structure rather than PIF simply holding shares as a financial investor.

Why the Move Would Matter for the Gulf

If confirmed, such a combination would represent one of the most consequential steps yet in the Gulf’s push to become a central player in global interactive entertainment. Saudi Arabia has spent years positioning itself as a gaming hub through PIF-backed investments, esports events, and infrastructure spending, and a deal of this scale would draw fresh attention to how sovereign wealth capital from the region is reshaping ownership structures across the wider gaming sector. For audiences across the UAE and the broader GCC, the development is notable both as a signal of continued regional ambition in entertainment and technology, and as a potential shift in how major publishers with large regional player bases are governed and financed.

Gulf gaming communities, including sizeable player populations in the UAE and Saudi Arabia itself, have a direct stake in titles published by EA, meaning any change in ownership or strategic direction could eventually influence how those franchises are developed, marketed, or expanded in the region. It would also reinforce a broader pattern in which Gulf sovereign funds are moving beyond passive shareholding into more direct operational involvement in the companies they back, a trend already visible in esports, film and other entertainment sectors tied to PIF and other regional investment vehicles.

At this stage, the reported consideration of combining EA with Savvy Games Group remains unconfirmed by the parties involved, and details on how such a restructuring might work in practice, including regulatory considerations in the United States and elsewhere, have not been disclosed. Analysts and industry observers are likely to watch closely for any official confirmation, given the scale of EA’s global publishing business and the precedent a formal merger or absorption into Savvy would set for sovereign wealth involvement in major gaming companies. Until PIF, Savvy or EA comment directly, the reported plan should be treated as an early-stage development rather than a finalized transaction.
