Maalexi Closes $2.8M Seed Round Led by Tawuniya

DUBAI — Maalexi, a UAE-based agricultural trade fintech, has closed a $2.8 million seed round that was oversubscribed, led by Saudi-listed insurer Tawuniya with continued participation from Global Ventures, as the company builds toward a Series A raise and expands its regulated trading infrastructure across the Gulf.

Founded in Dubai in 2021 by Azam Pasha and Rohit Majhi, Maalexi operates a technology platform that combines artificial intelligence, IoT sensors, and blockchain verification to authenticate agricultural commodities, manage counterparty and quality risk, and enable transparent settlement for cross-border trade. The platform currently connects buyers and sellers across the UAE, Saudi Arabia, India, and Europe, targeting inefficiencies in commodity trade finance that have historically relied on manual documentation and fragmented trust mechanisms.

Why Tawuniya’s backing matters for GCC agri-trade

Tawuniya’s participation signals growing interest from Gulf insurers in fintech infrastructure that reduces trade-finance risk. As one of Saudi Arabia’s largest listed insurers, Tawuniya’s involvement gives Maalexi credibility with regional banks and commodity houses that require verified, insurable trade instruments before extending credit. For UAE-based trading firms, particularly those in Dubai’s commodity and logistics hubs, this validates blockchain-verified settlement as a viable alternative to traditional letters of credit, potentially shortening settlement cycles and lowering financing costs for cross-border agricultural deals.

Implications for UAE fintech founders and investors

The round underscores continued appetite among Gulf investors for vertical fintech platforms addressing trade finance gaps in food security and agriculture — a priority sector for both the UAE and Saudi Arabia under their respective economic diversification agendas. For UAE founders building in agri-tech or supply chain finance, Maalexi’s ability to attract a strategic insurer as lead investor, rather than a pure financial backer, may offer a template for structuring partnerships that combine capital with regulatory and risk-management expertise. Investors tracking Dubai’s fintech ecosystem will note the deal as further evidence that oversubscribed seed rounds remain achievable for startups with cross-border GCC-India trade corridors and clear regulatory pathways.
