Google Gemini Live Extends to Home Speakers in UAE

DUBAI — Google has begun extending its Gemini Live conversational assistant to first-generation Google Home speakers and displays, a rollout that includes the UAE among early markets as smart-home adoption accelerates across the Gulf’s residential and hospitality sectors.

The update, confirmed by Google alongside changes reported by Android Police and 9to5Google, brings natural-language voice interaction and expanded context memory of up to 15 minutes to older hardware previously limited to basic command-response functions. Access requires a Google Home Premium subscription and enrollment in an early-access programme, positioning the feature as a paid upgrade rather than a free firmware push. A parallel update to Nest Cam integration is scheduled for July 2026, extending AI-driven monitoring to existing camera hardware without requiring device replacement.

Relevance to UAE smart-home and proptech markets

The UAE has one of the highest smart-home penetration rates in the region, driven by developer partnerships in Dubai and Abu Dhabi that bundle connected devices into new residential towers. Extending advanced AI to legacy hardware reduces replacement costs for property developers and facility managers who have already deployed thousands of Google Home units across serviced apartments, hotels and villas. For UAE proptech operators, this lowers the barrier to offering AI-enhanced amenities without capital-intensive hardware refreshes, a factor likely to influence procurement decisions in 2026 development pipelines.

Implications for regional subscription and AI services

The shift toward a Premium subscription model signals a broader monetisation trend that UAE-based consumer technology distributors and telecom retailers should track closely. Etisalat by e& and du, both of which retail smart-home devices, may see increased attach-rate opportunities for subscription bundles tied to AI features. For local startups building voice-interface or home-automation layers atop Google’s ecosystem, expanded context memory and camera integration open new possibilities for value-added services, particularly in elderly care monitoring and short-term rental management, two segments with active investor interest in Dubai’s proptech and hospitality-tech scenes.
