Etched AI Chip Startup Hits $10.3B Valuation

DUBAI — AI chip startup Etched has reached a $10.3 billion valuation in a new funding round backed by prominent technology investors, a development being closely watched across the UAE’s rapidly expanding artificial intelligence infrastructure sector. The Harvard-dropout-founded company has built specialised chips and memory components designed to accelerate inference on AI models without relying on traditional GPUs, positioning it as a potential challenger to Nvidia’s dominance in the compute supply chain that underpins Gulf AI ambitions.

Why the Valuation Matters for Gulf Capital

Etched’s rise comes as UAE-linked investment vehicles, including Mubadala, ADQ and MGX, have poured billions into AI infrastructure globally, from data centres to chip design startups. The scarcity of high-performance inference hardware has been a persistent bottleneck for regional AI deployments tied to initiatives such as G42’s data centre expansion and the UAE’s broader push to become a top-tier AI hub. A well-capitalised alternative chip supplier reduces dependency risk on a single vendor and could offer Gulf sovereign funds new entry points for direct or co-investment stakes as Etched scales production and seeks additional capital.

Abu Dhabi and Dubai-based venture funds have increasingly sought allocations in specialised semiconductor and inference-acceleration startups, viewing them as adjacent bets to the region’s data centre and cloud buildout. Etched’s valuation jump signals continued investor appetite for infrastructure plays that sit beneath the AI application layer, an area UAE institutional investors have prioritised over consumer-facing AI startups.

Implications for UAE AI Startups and Enterprises

For UAE-based AI startups and enterprise technology teams, cheaper, faster inference hardware could lower the cost of deploying large language models locally, supporting data residency requirements increasingly favoured by regional regulators and government entities. Companies building on top of sovereign AI platforms, including those linked to Abu Dhabi’s Technology Innovation Institute, may benefit from diversified hardware options as inference costs remain a major constraint on scaling generative AI products across banking, logistics and government services in the Emirates.
