Embark Studios expands its universes beyond the screen

game to TV film adaptations

Swedish developer Embark Studios is taking two of its biggest gaming properties into television and film, with both Arc Raiders and The Finals confirmed to be in development for screen adaptations. The move, reported by Arc Raiders and The Finals are getting TV series and film adaptations, marks a significant step for the studio as it looks to extend its intellectual property beyond the confines of gaming platforms and into mainstream entertainment.

Arc Raiders, a free-to-play sci-fi title that launched into early access to strong player interest, is being lined up for both a television series and a feature film. The Finals, Embark’s competitive multiplayer shooter known for its destructible environments and fast-paced team combat, is similarly being developed for both formats. No production partners, studios, directors, or release timelines have been announced for either project, leaving fans to speculate on how and when the adaptations will eventually reach audiences.

Embark Studios has not detailed how closely either adaptation will follow its source material, nor whether the storytelling will expand the lore of these game worlds or introduce entirely new narratives built around existing characters and settings. What is clear is that the studio sees enough commercial and creative potential in both franchises to pursue parallel development across television and cinema simultaneously, rather than committing to a single format.

Part of a wider industry shift

The announcement fits into a broader pattern reshaping the gaming industry, where publishers increasingly view their interactive properties as launchpads for multi-platform entertainment franchises rather than standalone products. The success of HBO’s adaptation of The Last of Us has been widely cited as a turning point, demonstrating that game-based television can achieve critical acclaim and mainstream viewership rather than being dismissed as a niche curiosity. That success has encouraged other studios to pursue similar paths, betting that established game worlds and existing fanbases can translate into engaged audiences on streaming platforms and in cinemas.

For Embark Studios, the dual adaptations represent a chance to introduce Arc Raiders and The Finals to viewers who may never have picked up a controller, potentially driving new player interest back toward the games themselves. This cross-promotional loop—where screen adaptations boost game sales and engaged players in turn fuel demand for more screen content—has become a central strategy for studios looking to maximize the lifespan and reach of their biggest titles.

While neither project has a confirmed release window, the announcement alone signals growing confidence in gaming narratives as viable foundations for scripted entertainment. For audiences in the UAE and wider Gulf region, where gaming consumption and streaming subscriptions have both seen strong growth in recent years, such adaptations could offer another avenue for regional viewers to engage with franchises already popular on screens and consoles alike. As more details emerge about production partners and timelines, the projects will likely be watched closely by both gaming communities and entertainment industry observers tracking the next phase of this cross-media trend.
