Abu Dhabi Fund Weighs Multibillion-Dollar Bet on Japanese AI Infrastructure

Mubadala Investment Company, the Abu Dhabi sovereign wealth fund, is exploring a $6.3 billion investment in artificial intelligence data centres in Japan, according to a Mingtiandi report, in a move that would mark one of the largest single deployments of Gulf capital into Asian digital infrastructure to date. The prospective deal underscores the accelerating global race among sovereign investors to secure exposure to the computing power underpinning the AI boom.

While specific terms of the transaction, including the identity of potential partners or the exact facilities involved, have not been disclosed, the scale of the figure signals the extent of capital now flowing into data centre development as demand for AI processing capacity outpaces existing supply worldwide. Data centres purpose-built for AI workloads require substantially more power, cooling and specialised hardware than traditional facilities, driving up construction and operating costs and, in turn, the size of investments needed to build at scale.

Japan has emerged as a focal point for such capital in recent years. The country’s stable regulatory environment, established technology base and growing corporate appetite for AI adoption across manufacturing, finance and robotics have made it an attractive destination for institutional investors seeking long-term, income-generating digital infrastructure assets. Japanese enterprises and startups have been steadily expanding their AI operations, fuelling demand for the kind of high-capacity, reliable data centre capacity that global funds are now racing to provide.

Part of a Wider Gulf Push into Global Tech Infrastructure

The potential investment fits into a broader pattern of strategy at Mubadala, which has increasingly directed capital toward technology, cloud computing and infrastructure assets as part of its diversification mandate. Abu Dhabi’s sovereign funds have in recent years built up a substantial footprint in artificial intelligence and semiconductor-adjacent businesses, reflecting a wider UAE strategy of positioning itself as a serious player in the global AI economy rather than solely a source of passive capital.

For the UAE and the broader Gulf region, deals of this nature carry significance beyond the balance sheet. Sovereign funds such as Mubadala, the Public Investment Fund and the Qatar Investment Authority have all been expanding their allocations to data centres and AI-linked infrastructure internationally, seeking both financial returns and strategic positioning in a sector widely viewed as critical to future economic competitiveness. A large-scale commitment to Japanese AI infrastructure would extend this trend into one of Asia’s most mature and stable markets, offering diversification away from Gulf-based projects while still tying returns to a sector aligned with the region’s own domestic AI ambitions.

The move also illustrates how Gulf capital is increasingly being channelled into cross-border digital infrastructure rather than more traditional real estate or energy assets. As global operators and hyperscalers compete for sites, power access and construction capacity to meet surging AI demand, sovereign wealth funds with substantial liquidity have become key financiers of the build-out, often taking direct or joint-venture stakes in facilities rather than purely portfolio-style investments.

Should the reported $6.3 billion commitment proceed, it would rank among Mubadala’s more prominent recent forays into Asian technology infrastructure, adding to a portfolio that already spans investments across sectors including semiconductors, cloud services and renewable energy. Further details on the structure, timeline and specific facilities tied to the prospective Japan investment are expected to emerge as discussions progress.
