Twin towers mark milestone countdown

Dubai’s Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest building, and Abu Dhabi’s Mubadala Tower were illuminated on Tuesday evening in a coordinated light display announcing the 50-day countdown to the 2026 Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. The synchronized lighting of the two skyline landmarks, one in each emirate, was staged as part of promotional activities ahead of next year’s race, according to a report by the Burj Khalifa, Mubadala Tower light up for Abu Dhabi Grand Prix countdown, which first detailed the display.

The choice of both towers, rather than a single structure, was intended to signal that the Grand Prix is treated as a national event rather than one confined to its host city. Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi has hosted the race since Formula 1 first arrived in the UAE, and it typically closes out the global racing calendar each season, drawing large crowds of residents and international visitors to the capital.

A fixture on the UAE events calendar

The Abu Dhabi Grand Prix has grown over the years into one of the most closely watched entries on the UAE’s sporting and entertainment calendar, combining the on-track race with concerts, fan zones and hospitality events that extend well beyond the circuit itself. Its continuation into 2026 under the Etihad Airways naming partnership reflects the sustained involvement of major UAE-based corporations in positioning the country as a hub for global sport and entertainment.

For residents and expats across the country, the lighting of both towers serves as a visible, early marker that preparations for the race weekend are underway, well ahead of ticket sales, schedule confirmations and the arrival of teams and drivers later in the year. Such cross-emirate promotional efforts also illustrate how large-scale events in Abu Dhabi are increasingly marketed with visibility in Dubai as well, reinforcing a shared national identity around flagship occasions rather than treating them as isolated to one city.

The event’s continued staging also carries economic weight for the broader UAE picture, with race weekends historically boosting hotel occupancy, retail activity and tourism numbers in Abu Dhabi, while generating spillover interest in Dubai given the proximity between the two emirates. Authorities and event organizers have in previous years used similar landmark illuminations to build public anticipation in the weeks leading up to the race, a tactic that appears to be repeating itself with the 2026 edition.

Further details on ticketing, the full race schedule and supporting entertainment lineup for the 2026 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix are expected to be announced closer to the event, as organizers continue to build momentum through public displays such as this week’s tower lighting. For now, the illuminated Burj Khalifa and Mubadala Tower stand as the first visible signal that the countdown to next year’s race has formally begun.
