Studio Restructure Reshapes Xbox’s UK Development Footprint

Microsoft’s Xbox division has confirmed a sweeping reorganisation of its internal studios, transferring British developer Rare and the Halo franchise to Activision Blizzard, while proposing the closure of Ninja Theory and cutting a further 268 roles across its Halo development teams. The changes mark one of the most significant shake-ups of Xbox’s studio structure in recent years, touching some of the platform’s most recognisable properties.

Rare, the storied UK studio behind titles such as Donkey Kong Country and Perfect Dark, will now sit under Activision Blizzard’s umbrella, alongside the Halo franchise itself. The move effectively folds two of Xbox’s most storied intellectual properties into the Activision Blizzard structure that Microsoft acquired in 2023, signalling a deeper integration of the two companies’ development pipelines than previously seen. Ninja Theory, known for Hellblade and DmC: Devil May Cry, is separately facing closure, according to the announcement first reported by Xbox transfers Rare and Halo franchise to Activision, proposes closure of Ninja Theory, and confirms another 268 roles cut amid studio restructure.

The layoffs at Halo Studios add to a string of earlier job cuts across Microsoft’s gaming division, underscoring a period of sustained cost-cutting and consolidation since the Activision Blizzard acquisition closed. Industry observers note that the transfers suggest Microsoft is seeking to streamline overlapping development capacity between its legacy Xbox studios and the newly absorbed Activision Blizzard teams, rather than expand output across both.

What the Changes Mean for GCC Gamers

No specific announcements have been made regarding the Middle East, and the restructuring appears focused squarely on UK-based development operations. Even so, the implications are likely to reach the UAE and wider Gulf region, where Halo and Rare titles maintain a loyal player base among console gamers. Any shift in how these franchises are developed, published or scheduled under Activision Blizzard’s structure could influence future release timelines and regional marketing strategies for players across the GCC.

The restructuring also arrives at a moment when subscription services, cloud gaming and regional esports investment are reshaping how Gulf audiences access major franchises, a trend closely tracked in TAI News’s gaming coverage. With Microsoft continuing to consolidate its studio portfolio following the Activision Blizzard deal, further changes to how flagship franchises are managed, published or ported to different platforms cannot be ruled out.

For now, Xbox has not detailed how the transfer of Rare and Halo will affect ongoing projects tied to those franchises, nor has it clarified the timeline for Ninja Theory’s proposed closure. Employees affected by the 268 role cuts at Halo Studios have not been named, and Microsoft has not indicated whether additional restructuring across its global studios, including any operations connected to Middle East markets, is under consideration.
