New telescope begins wide-angle survey of the cosmos

NASA’s Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope has begun its scientific mission, embarking on a sweeping search for distant planets, dark matter and dark energy that mission scientists say will reshape understanding of the universe. The observatory joins the Hubble and James Webb space telescopes as the latest instrument in NASA’s long-term strategy to probe deep space, but with a design built for breadth rather than the narrow, detailed views its predecessors specialise in.

Roman’s defining feature is its wide field of view, which vastly exceeds that of the Hubble Space Telescope. Where Hubble captures detailed images of relatively small patches of sky, Roman is engineered to survey much larger swathes of the cosmos in a single observation, allowing astronomers to cover more ground without sacrificing the sensitivity needed to detect faint, distant objects. Scientists overseeing the mission expect this capability to translate into an enormous volume of new data, with projections suggesting the telescope could help identify thousands of previously unknown planets and catalogue billions of galaxies over the course of its operations.

Among Roman’s primary objectives is a systematic hunt for exoplanets, the term used for planets orbiting stars beyond the solar system. Rather than targeting individual star systems one at a time, the telescope is designed to monitor vast stellar fields simultaneously, using techniques that can reveal the subtle gravitational and light-based signatures of planets that would otherwise go undetected. This approach is expected to significantly expand the known catalogue of exoplanets, including types of worlds that have been difficult to detect with existing instruments.

Mapping dark matter and dark energy

Beyond planet-hunting, Roman has been tasked with mapping the large-scale structure of the universe in order to shed light on two of astrophysics’ most persistent mysteries: dark matter and dark energy. These invisible forces are believed to make up the vast majority of the universe’s mass and energy, yet they remain poorly understood because they cannot be observed directly. By charting how galaxies are distributed across immense stretches of space, and how that distribution has changed over cosmic time, researchers hope to gather indirect evidence that clarifies how these forces shape the universe’s expansion and structure.

NASA has positioned Roman as a complementary tool to Hubble and James Webb rather than a replacement, with the three observatories expected to work in tandem. While Webb excels at capturing detailed infrared images of specific objects and Hubble continues to provide high-resolution optical observations, Roman’s strength lies in scale, enabling broad surveys that can then guide more focused follow-up studies by the other telescopes. Mission officials view this multi-observatory approach as central to advancing fundamental astrophysics research in the coming years.

Although the mission is led entirely by the United States, its scientific output is expected to have global reach, with data likely to be shared across the international research community. For the Gulf region, the launch arrives at a time of expanding interest in space science, with the UAE’s national space agency continuing to invest in satellite technology, planetary exploration and STEM education initiatives. Breakthroughs from missions such as Roman are likely to feed into academic and research collaborations that Gulf institutions are increasingly seeking to join, reinforcing the region’s ambitions to build scientific capacity in space-related fields even as the telescope itself operates far beyond any single nation’s borders.
