New Studio Joins 2K’s Sports Portfolio

2K Games has founded a new internal studio, Small Axe Studios, dedicated to producing AAA sports titles, as the publisher continues to broaden its in-house development network. Based in Vancouver, Canada, the newly formed team marks the latest addition to 2K’s roster of development houses, joining the ranks of studios already responsible for the publisher’s flagship sports franchises.

The launch of Small Axe Studios signals 2K’s intent to deepen its direct control over the sports gaming category, an area that has long anchored the company’s commercial success. While the studio’s specific project assignments have not been disclosed, its positioning as a dedicated sports developer aligns it closely with 2K’s existing lineup, which includes NBA 2K, WWE 2K, and PGA Tour 2K. These franchises represent some of the publisher’s most consistent revenue drivers, released annually and supported by large, dedicated player communities across consoles and PC.

Details regarding the size of the new studio, its leadership team, and the timeline for its first project have not been made public. However, the decision to build an in-house team rather than continuing to lean exclusively on external developers points to a broader strategic shift toward tighter oversight of development pipelines, quality control, and release schedules for its sports properties.

Industry-Wide Push for Internal Studio Ownership

The formation of Small Axe Studios reflects a wider pattern across the gaming industry, where major publishers have increasingly moved to acquire or establish internal studios rather than depend solely on third-party development partners. This trend has accelerated as publishers seek greater control over long-running franchises, particularly those with annual release cycles and live-service components that require sustained post-launch support.

By owning development studios outright, publishers such as 2K are able to retain institutional knowledge, manage production timelines more directly, and reduce dependency on external contracts that can complicate long-term franchise planning. Sports titles, in particular, benefit from this approach given their yearly release cadence and the need for continuous roster updates, engine improvements, and licensing integrations with sports leagues and organizations.

The move also comes at a time when consolidation continues to reshape the broader gaming landscape, with publishers expanding their internal capacity to safeguard key intellectual property and maintain competitive advantages in a market where sports gaming remains a lucrative but demanding segment.

For now, 2K has not detailed which specific franchise or franchises Small Axe Studios will support, nor has it indicated whether the studio will work on an entirely new sports title or contribute to existing series. Further announcements regarding staffing, leadership appointments, and project scope are expected to follow as the studio ramps up operations.

This development is currently confined to 2K’s international studio network, with no indication of direct implications for gaming operations or partnerships in the UAE or wider Gulf region at this stage. Regional gaming stakeholders, however, continue to monitor global publisher strategies as international sports gaming franchises maintain a strong following among players across the GCC.
