Bundle Nears Fundraising Milestone

A charity game bundle organized by independent studio Necrosoft Games is closing in on a $200,000 fundraising target, with proceeds earmarked for video game industry workers in the United States and Canada who have lost their jobs amid a prolonged wave of layoffs. The bundle is being hosted on Itch.io, the independent digital distribution platform known for supporting community-driven charity drives that package multiple games together at a discounted price.

The initiative comes as the games industry continues to grapple with the fallout of large-scale workforce reductions that have hit major publishers and studios across North America since 2023. Thousands of developers, artists, designers and support staff have been affected by rounds of layoffs at some of the sector’s biggest companies, prompting grassroots efforts within the industry to provide financial relief to those left without income.

Bundles of this kind typically offer buyers access to a curated collection of games or other digital products for a set price, with all or most of the proceeds funneled toward the stated cause. Itch.io has hosted similar charity campaigns in the past, often drawing support from independent developers eager to contribute their work to causes affecting their peers.

A Global Industry Under Strain

While the Necrosoft Games-led effort is specifically directed at supporting displaced workers in the US and Canada, the underlying problem it addresses is not confined to North America. Layoffs in the video game sector have become a recurring feature of the industry landscape worldwide over the past two years, touching studios of varying sizes across multiple regions as companies restructure, scale back projects, or shift priorities following pandemic-era hiring surges.

The trend has also drawn attention from developers and industry observers in the Gulf, where gaming has emerged as a fast-growing sector tied to broader economic diversification strategies in the UAE and Saudi Arabia. Both countries have made significant investments in building local game development talent, studios and publishing ventures, positioning the region as an increasingly important node in the global gaming ecosystem. Industry professionals in the GCC have followed the North American layoff wave closely, given the interconnected nature of game development, publishing and investment across international markets.

Regional gaming hubs in Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Riyadh have in recent years attracted studios, esports operators and investment funds seeking to tap into a young, digitally engaged population. As Gulf-backed entities increase their stakes in international gaming companies and platforms, disruptions such as layoffs at major North American studios can have ripple effects on projects, partnerships and hiring pipelines that extend into the region.

The Necrosoft Games bundle underscores how independent developers and grassroots charitable efforts have stepped in to address gaps left by corporate restructuring, offering direct financial support to individuals rather than relying solely on severance packages or unemployment assistance. As the campaign approaches its funding goal, it adds to a growing list of community-led responses within the gaming sector aimed at cushioning the impact of layoffs on workers, even as the structural pressures driving those layoffs remain largely unresolved across the global industry.
