Bahrain awards Golden Licenses to $3.89bn in projects

Bahrain Golden Licenses

Bahrain has handed out Golden Licenses to four large-scale projects worth a combined $3.89 billion, the Bahrain Economic Development Board announced at Gateway Gulf 2026 in Manama.

For investors and businesses across the GCC, the announcement signals that Bahrain is pushing harder to pull in foreign capital at a time when every Gulf state is competing for the same pool of global investors. A Golden License typically fast-tracks regulatory approvals and land allocation, so the four winning projects should move from paper to construction faster than a standard investment would.

Key facts

  • Four projects received Golden Licenses, together valued at $3.89 billion
  • The awards were announced at Gateway Gulf, held November 1-2, 2026, at the Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay
  • More than 200 global ministerial officials, chief executives and investors attended the invitation-only forum
  • Sectors covered include aviation logistics, real estate and technology
  • One of the four, Digital City Bahrain, is planned as an ICT and innovation hub designed to attract technology companies and support education

Which projects got Golden Licenses in Bahrain

The Bahrain EDB named four projects in total, spanning aviation logistics, real estate and technology, though not all four were detailed publicly. Digital City Bahrain stands out for readers tracking technology news in the Gulf. It is billed as a next-generation hub for ICT, innovation and education, built around what the EDB describes as world-class infrastructure. The goal is to cluster technology companies in one location, which Bahrain hopes will speed up growth in its digital sector and strengthen an ecosystem it has been building for years as a smaller, more nimble alternative to bigger Gulf tech hubs.

The other three Golden License projects cover aviation logistics and real estate, according to the Bahrain EDB, though specific company names and individual investment figures for each project were not disclosed in the announcement. Gateway Gulf itself was hosted by the Bahrain EDB and ran as an invitation-only event, limiting attendance to senior government officials and chief executives rather than the general public or press.

What it means for Gulf investors and businesses

Bahrain has used Gateway Gulf as its main annual platform to court foreign capital since the forum launched, and this is its fourth edition. Drawing more than 200 senior officials and investors to Manama for two days puts Bahrain in direct competition with Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Riyadh and Doha, all of which run their own investment forums each year.

A $3.89 billion commitment across four projects is a meaningful sum for a country the size of Bahrain, whose economy is smaller than its larger Gulf neighbors. If Digital City Bahrain and the other projects proceed as planned, they could create new contract opportunities for construction firms, IT infrastructure providers and real estate developers across the region, not just inside Bahrain. The emphasis on economic diversification also fits a pattern seen across the GCC, where governments are trying to reduce reliance on oil revenue by building out technology, logistics and real estate sectors instead.

What happens next will depend on how quickly the four projects move from Golden License status to actual construction and operation. The Bahrain EDB has not yet given a timeline for when Digital City Bahrain or the other three projects will break ground, nor has it named all the companies or investors behind each one.
