Atoms Raises $1.7B: Industrial AI Boom Signals UAE Investment

DUBAI — Atoms, the industrial AI and robotics venture founded by former Uber chief executive Travis Kalanick, has raised $1.7 billion in a funding round led by Andreessen Horowitz, with Uber Technologies also participating as an investor, according to disclosures made this week. The raise ranks among the largest private robotics financings globally and signals renewed institutional appetite for automation infrastructure plays, a theme that carries direct relevance for sovereign and private capital allocators across the UAE and wider GCC.

Gulf Capital Already Positioned in the Sector

UAE-linked investors have been active in robotics and industrial AI for several years, with Mubadala Investment Company and ADQ both holding positions in automation and advanced manufacturing portfolios, either directly or through venture funds. Abu Dhabi’s G42 has separately built out AI infrastructure that intersects with robotics applications in logistics and energy. The Atoms round, while not confirmed to include Gulf participants, illustrates the scale of capital now flowing into a sector where regional sovereign wealth funds have signalled long-term conviction, particularly as Abu Dhabi and Riyadh compete to position themselves as AI and robotics hubs beyond Silicon Valley.

Implications for UAE Founders and Logistics Operators

For founders building in industrial automation, warehousing, or port logistics — sectors central to Dubai’s trade economy and Abu Dhabi’s manufacturing diversification under Operation 300bn — the Atoms raise underscores investor willingness to fund capital-intensive robotics ventures even absent fully proven commercial deployment. Kalanick’s company has offered limited public detail on its actual products, drawing scrutiny from analysts who note the round rests heavily on narrative and founder pedigree rather than disclosed revenue. UAE-based logistics operators, including those tied to DP World and Etihad Rail’s automation initiatives, will likely watch how Atoms translates funding into deployable hardware, given the region’s own ambitions to automate ports, free zones and last-mile delivery networks. The deal also reinforces a broader pattern: US mega-rounds in physical AI are increasingly courting Gulf-adjacent capital pools, whether through direct sovereign participation or via venture funds with UAE limited partners, making transactions like this one a bellwether for where regional institutional money may flow next.
