A Decade of Growing Labour Organising

video game industry unionisation

Unionisation efforts within the global video games industry have accelerated over the past ten years, as developers, quality assurance staff and other studio employees push for formal protections that have historically been absent from the sector. What began as isolated worker campaigns at individual studios has evolved into a broader movement spanning multiple countries and companies, reflecting shared frustrations over job security, workload and management practices that many in the industry describe as systemic rather than isolated to any single employer.

The push for collective bargaining has been driven largely by concerns over working conditions that employees say have gone unaddressed for years, including extended crunch periods, unpredictable layoffs and a lack of structured grievance processes. Workers organising in studios across North America and Europe have increasingly turned to unions as a mechanism to secure enforceable contracts, rather than relying on informal company policies that can shift without notice. The trend has been detailed in a recent report titled State of the Unions: the rise of unionisation in games workplaces, which traces how organising campaigns have moved from the margins of the industry into mainstream labour discourse among major studios and publishers.

Why It Matters for the Gulf’s Gaming Sector

Although the unionisation wave has largely unfolded in Western markets, its implications extend beyond those regions as the games industry becomes increasingly globalised. The UAE and wider GCC have positioned themselves as emerging hubs for game development, esports events and studio investment, attracting both international companies setting up regional offices and homegrown developers seeking to scale. As this sector matures, questions around workplace standards, contractual protections and employee treatment are likely to surface locally as well, even in the absence of established union structures in the region.

Unlike markets with long histories of organised labour, most GCC studios—whether branches of multinational publishers or independent regional developers—currently operate without formalised worker bargaining frameworks. That does not mean labour concerns are absent; rather, it suggests that discussions around job stability, working hours and grievance handling remain largely informal and dependent on individual company policy rather than collective agreements.

For industry observers and policymakers in the UAE and broader Gulf, tracking international unionisation trends offers a useful reference point as local gaming ecosystems expand. As governments in the region continue to court investment in interactive entertainment and esports infrastructure, the experiences of unionised studios abroad—covering everything from crunch culture to layoff protections—could inform how workplace governance evolves within the region’s own gaming sector. Whether GCC-based studios eventually see similar organising efforts remains uncertain, but the global conversation around labour rights in game development is unlikely to bypass the region entirely as it continues attracting talent and major industry players.
