Shigeru Miyamoto Order of Culture award

Shigeru Miyamoto, the Nintendo designer behind some of the most recognisable characters in entertainment history, is set to become the first video game developer to receive Japan’s Order of Culture award. The honour, among the highest bestowed by the Japanese state for contributions to arts and culture, has traditionally gone to novelists, scientists, musicians and painters, making Miyamoto’s inclusion a notable departure for an institution that has rarely, if ever, acknowledged interactive entertainment as a cultural pursuit worthy of the same recognition.

Miyamoto’s career at Nintendo spans more than four decades, during which he created or co-created franchises including Super Mario, The Legend of Zelda and Star Fox. Those properties have anchored Nintendo’s business and shaped the habits and expectations of generations of players, from early console adopters to today’s mobile and streaming audiences. The news was first reported by Nintendo veteran Shigeru Miyamoto to receive Japan’s Order of Culture award, which detailed the award’s significance within Japan’s broader cultural honours system.

What It Signals for Gaming as Culture

The decision to honour a game designer alongside figures from literature, science and the fine arts is being read by industry observers as an official acknowledgement that video games have matured into a legitimate cultural medium rather than a purely commercial or juvenile pastime. For an industry that has spent decades seeking parity with film, music and visual art in terms of institutional respect, the award carries symbolic weight well beyond Japan’s borders.

That symbolism extends to markets far from Tokyo, including the UAE and the wider GCC, where gaming has grown into a substantial segment of the entertainment economy. Nintendo’s franchises enjoy a large and active following across the region, spanning console owners, mobile players and esports enthusiasts who have grown up with Mario and Zelda titles. As Gulf governments continue to invest in esports infrastructure, game development studios and digital entertainment as part of broader economic diversification strategies, recognition of a figure like Miyamoto reinforces the argument that gaming merits serious cultural and economic consideration rather than being treated as a niche hobby. The broader gaming sector has increasingly positioned itself alongside film and music in cultural policy discussions, and this award adds a high-profile data point to that narrative.

Industry analysts suggest the recognition could set a precedent, encouraging other national and international institutions to consider game creators for honours historically reserved for traditional artists. Should that shift take hold, it may prompt cultural bodies in regions including the Gulf to reassess how they categorise and support video game development, design and storytelling talent domestically.

For Nintendo, the award arrives as the company continues to lean on Miyamoto’s legacy franchises to anchor its hardware and software business, even as competition intensifies from mobile gaming and subscription services worldwide. The Order of Culture honour, while a domestic Japanese award, is likely to be cited internationally as evidence that the medium Miyamoto helped define has earned a permanent place in the broader cultural conversation.
