Ministry Confirms Source of Odour

UAE oil spill tanker odour

The UAE Ministry of Climate Change and Environment has confirmed that an oil spill from a tanker was behind the unusual smell reported by residents across Sharjah, Ajman and Umm Al Quwain in recent days. The confirmation came after a wave of complaints from the public prompted officials to investigate the source of the odour, which had unsettled residents in the three northern emirates.

According to the ministry, teams traced the smell to an oil spill linked to a tanker, though it did not elaborate on how the spill occurred or the exact location at sea where it originated. Authorities said the matter was taken seriously once reports began surfacing from multiple communities, with the ministry stepping in to lead the investigation and keep the public informed as findings developed.

The news was first detailed in a report from UAE ministry says tanker oil spill caused ‘foul smell’ in Sharjah, UAQ, Ajman, which outlined the ministry’s statement confirming the spill as the cause of the smell affecting residents in the affected emirates.

No Health Risk, Officials Say

Despite the alarm caused by the odour, the ministry was clear in stating that the smell does not pose any danger to public health. Officials sought to reassure residents in Sharjah, Ajman and Umm Al Quwain that although the odour may have been noticeable and, for some, unpleasant, it did not indicate a risk requiring precautionary measures or medical attention.

The affected area spans a mix of coastal and inland communities across the three emirates, reflecting how far the smell appeared to travel following the spill. The ministry’s swift confirmation is likely intended to curb speculation and rumours that often accompany unexplained environmental occurrences, particularly in densely populated residential areas where residents had taken to reporting the odour before any official cause had been identified.

The incident underscores the role federal environmental authorities play in monitoring and responding to pollution events along the UAE’s coastline, an area of particular importance given the country’s extensive maritime traffic and reliance on coastal infrastructure. While the ministry has not indicated further action beyond its investigation and public statement, the episode adds to a broader pattern of environmental monitoring that forms part of the wider UAE approach to managing industrial and maritime risks near populated areas.

No further details have been released regarding the tanker involved, the scale of the spill, or whether any cleanup or remediation efforts are underway along affected coastal stretches. Residents in the three emirates have not been advised to take any specific precautions, with the ministry’s statement effectively closing the immediate public concern over the odour’s origin, even as questions remain about the broader circumstances surrounding the spill itself.
