UAE Tourist VAT Refund Now Takes 1 Day, Not 9 Days

UAE tourist VAT refund

If you’ve ever shopped in Dubai and waited more than a week for your tax refund to land, that’s about to change. The UAE’s Federal Tax Authority has rolled out a new digital system that cuts the tourist VAT refund wait from roughly nine days down to just one business day.

The upgrade is already live at the UAE’s three biggest airports: Dubai International Airport (DXB), Zayed International Airport in Abu Dhabi and Sharjah International Airport. That covers the vast majority of travellers flying in and out of the country, which means most tourists claiming a VAT refund will notice the difference almost immediately.

How does the new VAT refund system in Dubai and Abu Dhabi actually work?

The FTA built this platform to do three things: speed up refunds, cut waiting times at the airport and get rid of the paperwork tourists used to deal with. It was developed together with Planet, the company officially authorised to run the UAE’s VAT Refund Scheme for Tourists.

The system leans on artificial intelligence, an upgraded mobile app, facial recognition and automated transaction checks. In plain terms, instead of a tourist standing in line with printed receipts and a passport, waiting for a staff member to manually verify each purchase, much of that process now happens digitally and gets confirmed through your face and your phone.

That matters because tax refund counters at busy airports have historically been one of the more frustrating parts of a tourist’s departure experience. Long queues right before a flight are stressful, and manual paperwork checks slow everything down. Automating identity verification and transaction matching removes a lot of that friction, both for travellers and for the staff processing claims.

According to the FTA, this change took effect as of October 2026. Before that, tourists were typically waiting around nine days to actually see their refund money. Now it’s down to one business day, a dramatic jump in speed that puts the UAE’s tourist refund experience much closer to instant.

Why this matters for UAE tourism and retail right now

Since the VAT Refund Scheme for Tourists launched in 2018, the FTA says about AED4.2bn ($1.14bn) has been refunded to visitors. That’s a significant amount of money flowing back to tourists over the years, and it shows just how many people shop in the UAE specifically knowing they can reclaim the tax later.

A faster, smoother refund process is good news for the UAE’s retail and tourism sectors too. Tourists who know they’ll get their money back quickly and without hassle are more likely to spend confidently, especially on bigger-ticket items like electronics, jewellery or designer goods. A clunky refund process, on the other hand, can quietly discourage spending or leave visitors with a sour final impression of their trip.

For retailers across Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah, this kind of back-end efficiency also reflects well on the broader shopping experience the UAE is trying to offer. Tourism and retail are closely linked industries here, and anything that removes friction from the tourist journey, from arrival to departure, tends to support both sectors at once. It’s the kind of practical, operational improvement that doesn’t always make headlines but has a real impact on how visitors feel about shopping and spending in the country. What to watch next is whether this one-day refund standard stays consistent as tourist numbers grow, particularly during peak travel seasons when airport volumes spike. The FTA and Planet will likely be tested most during busy periods like winter holidays or major UAE events, when thousands of tourists are departing at once. If the system holds up under that kind of pressure, it could become a genuine selling point for the UAE as a shopping and tourism destination. This report was first covered by Arabian Business.
