Retailers Bet on Less to Deliver More

retailers trimming product assortments

A growing number of major US retailers, from warehouse giant BJ’s Wholesale Club to athletic apparel brand Lululemon, are deliberately shrinking the number of products they stock in an effort to revive sales growth and simplify operations. The strategy marks a notable departure from the decades-long retail playbook of expanding shelf space and product variety to capture more customers, and instead signals a pivot toward curation as a competitive advantage.

According to a report originally published by From BJ’s to Lululemon, retailers are trimming assortments to boost business, warehouse and box store chains are actively culling items from their catalogues rather than continuing to expand inventory breadth. The approach is being framed by retail executives as a return to “healthy growth,” suggesting that leaner assortments can drive better financial performance than the sprawling product ranges many chains built up in recent years.

Why Retailers Are Rethinking Scale

The shift comes against a backdrop of lingering operational strain from the pandemic era, when many retailers overbuilt inventory in anticipation of sustained demand surges, only to find themselves saddled with excess stock, higher holding costs and squeezed profit margins once consumer spending patterns normalized. Trimming assortments is being positioned as a corrective measure: fewer products mean simpler supply chains, reduced markdown risk, and potentially stronger margins per item sold.

For companies like Lululemon, which has built its identity around premium positioning, a tighter product range may also reinforce brand exclusivity and reduce the cost and complexity of managing seasonal transitions. For bulk retailers such as BJ’s, curation could mean prioritizing higher-velocity items over long-tail products that tie up warehouse space and capital without delivering proportional sales. Industry observers see this as part of a broader rethink across the retail sector, one playing out alongside other structural shifts covered extensively in the business press, including changes in consumer spending habits, supply chain realignment and the growing role of data-driven inventory management.

While the immediate developments described center on US retail chains, the implications extend further. International brands with a significant assortment-trimming strategy often apply similar principles across their global footprint, including stores and franchises operating in the UAE and wider Gulf region. Many US and European retail names present in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and other major GCC cities operate under franchise or joint-venture structures, meaning headquarters-level decisions on product curation can eventually filter down to regional store layouts, stock allocation and supply planning.

For UAE-based retail operators and franchise partners, the trend raises questions about how much flexibility they retain in tailoring assortments to local consumer preferences versus following a leaner, globally standardized model. Gulf retail markets, which blend high-volume shopping mall culture with increasingly premium and curated retail concepts, could see this shift reflected in evolving floor space allocation and category management strategies over time. As global retailers recalibrate what “more” means in a post-pandemic economy, the ripple effects on sourcing, logistics and merchandising are likely to extend well beyond their home markets, with GCC retail stakeholders watching closely for cues on how trimmed assortments translate into sales performance before adapting their own strategies accordingly.
