Concentration risk in focus for equity-compensated employees

Financial advisers are increasingly urging tech employees to reconsider holding large amounts of their own company’s stock, arguing that many workers have become overexposed to a single equity position through salary, bonuses and long-term incentive plans. The guidance, highlighted in a recent Business Insider report, reflects a broader concern among wealth managers that employees who accumulate stock and options over years at one employer face outsized risk if that company’s share price falls sharply or the firm runs into financial difficulty.

The underlying issue is one of concentration: when a significant share of an employee’s net worth is tied to the fortunes of a single company, a downturn in that stock can simultaneously threaten both income and savings. This is a particular risk in the technology sector, where equity compensation—including restricted stock units, stock options and employee stock purchase plans—often makes up a substantial portion of total pay, especially for mid-career and senior staff at large or high-growth firms.

Advisers typically recommend that employees periodically sell vested shares and reinvest the proceeds into a diversified portfolio, rather than allowing company stock to accumulate unchecked in a brokerage account. The rationale is straightforward portfolio theory: diversification across sectors, asset classes and geographies reduces the impact of any single investment’s poor performance on overall wealth. For tech workers whose employer is also the source of their salary, health benefits and career prospects, that risk is compounded—a downturn at the company could affect both their job security and their investment portfolio at the same time.

Relevance for Gulf-based tech professionals

While the guidance originates from the US market, it carries relevance for the UAE and wider Gulf region, where a growing base of tech professionals—both expatriates working for multinational technology firms and employees at regional startups—receive equity or stock-linked compensation as part of their pay packages. Dubai and Abu Dhabi have positioned themselves as hubs for technology companies, venture-backed startups and regional offices of global tech firms, many of which offer stock options or restricted stock units to attract and retain talent in a competitive labor market.

For expatriate employees in the UAE, the calculus around holding versus selling company stock can be further complicated by tax residency considerations, currency exposure, and plans to relocate or repatriate savings. Financial planners in the region generally advise clients to treat employer stock as one component of a broader financial plan rather than a primary savings vehicle, particularly given the added complexity of managing overseas equity holdings from a Gulf base.

Diversification advice of the kind highlighted in the Business Insider report is not new, but it takes on added weight during periods of volatility in technology valuations globally. Employees weighing whether to hold or liquidate vested shares are typically encouraged to consult a licensed financial adviser who can assess their individual tax situation, risk tolerance and long-term financial goals before making decisions about large equity positions.
