UAE, Saudi Arabia plan electricity grid interconnection

UAE Saudi electricity grid interconnection

The UAE and Saudi Arabia are working on a plan to link their electricity grids, according to MEED, part of a wider wave of solar, wind and battery storage tenders moving across the region this month.

For UAE and Saudi businesses, a grid interconnection means power can move between the two countries when demand spikes or when one grid has surplus renewable generation to spare. That matters as both countries add more solar and battery capacity and look for ways to balance supply without building extra backup plants. It also signals how much project activity is now stacking up across the wider region, from Oman to Morocco to Algeria, giving GCC contractors, engineers and investors a longer list of contracts to chase.

Key facts

  • UAE and Saudi Arabia are planning an electricity interconnection, reported 9 October 2026
  • Developers are preparing bids for a 1GW battery energy storage system (bess) scheme in Oman, reported 12 October 2026
  • Abu Dhabi’s Ewec is preparing expressions of interest for two solar PV projects, reported 22 October 2026
  • A Spanish firm has won a solar design contract in Oman, also reported 22 October 2026
  • Egypt has signed a $650m deal for the Dandara solar project, reported 27 October 2026
  • Morocco has begun prequalification for 350MW of solar projects, reported 16 October 2026, while Algeria has tendered two 100MW wind farms, reported 9 October 2026

What the UAE-Saudi grid link means for the region

Connecting the UAE and Saudi grids would let electricity flow across the border depending on where it is needed most. If Saudi Arabia has excess solar power at midday, it could move into the UAE grid, and the reverse could happen during peak demand periods. This kind of link reduces the need for each country to build its own spare capacity purely for emergencies.

It also fits a pattern across the Gulf of countries treating power grids less as national assets and more as a shared regional resource. Oman, Saudi Arabia and the UAE already cooperate through the Gulf Cooperation Council Interconnection Authority, and a bilateral UAE-Saudi link would sit alongside that existing network. For investors and developers, a tighter grid connection usually points to more renewable projects being built, since surplus power has somewhere to go rather than going to waste.

Where else developers are chasing solar, wind and storage contracts

The interconnection plan landed in the same month as a string of renewable energy tenders across the wider region, based on the MEED roundup. In Oman, developers are preparing bids for a 1GW battery storage scheme, a project size that would rank among the larger standalone storage schemes announced in the Gulf this year. Separately, a Spanish firm has already won a solar design contract in the sultanate.

In the UAE, Abu Dhabi’s Ewec is preparing expressions of interest for two solar PV projects, adding to the emirate’s existing pipeline of utility-scale solar. Further afield, Egypt signed a $650m deal for the Dandara solar project, Morocco opened prequalification for 350MW of solar capacity, and Algeria put out tenders for two 100MW wind farms. Taken together, these deals show money moving into renewable generation and storage across North Africa and the Gulf at the same time, which is useful context for GCC contractors and financiers deciding where to bid next. Readers tracking this kind of innovation news will notice how closely grid upgrades, storage tenders and solar bids are now following each other across the region.

None of these projects are confirmed as built yet. The Oman bess scheme and Ewec’s two solar projects are still at the bidding or EoI stage, Morocco’s solar prequalification has only just opened, and the detailed terms of the UAE-Saudi interconnection have not been laid out, according to MEED. What happens next will depend on how quickly bids come in for the Oman storage scheme, whether Ewec shortlists bidders for its solar projects, and whether more detail emerges on the scope and timeline of the UAE-Saudi grid link itself.
