Domestic Gains Offset by Overseas Weakness

Starbucks international sales miss expectations

Starbucks reported quarterly results that fell short of overall Wall Street expectations, even as its long-struggling U.S. business showed clear signs of recovery. Comparable sales in the United States outpaced analyst forecasts, pointing to early traction for the coffee giant’s efforts to rebuild customer traffic and lift average spending per visit. However, a shortfall in the company’s international comparable sales dragged down the broader results, leaving total revenue below what markets had anticipated for the period.

The split outcome underscores a company in transition. Executives have spent recent quarters overhauling store operations, simplifying menus, and speeding up service in U.S. locations as part of a wider effort to win back customers who had drifted toward rivals or cut back on frequent coffee runs. The domestic improvement suggests those changes are beginning to resonate, even if the gains have not yet been enough to lift the company’s global numbers into positive territory against expectations. The results, first detailed in a report by Starbucks sales miss expectations, but its U.S. turnaround is gaining steam, highlight the uneven pace of the chain’s recovery across different markets.

Why the Gulf Market Matters

The international softness is particularly relevant for the Gulf, where Starbucks operates an extensive network of outlets across the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and neighbouring markets through regional franchise partnerships. The Middle East and Asia-Pacific regions were among the areas cited as underperforming analyst projections, raising questions about same-store sales momentum in markets that have historically been important growth drivers for the brand outside the United States.

For UAE and wider GCC consumers, Starbucks remains one of the most visible global café brands, with outlets embedded in malls, business districts, and residential communities across the region. A slowdown in international comparable sales growth does not necessarily mean fewer stores or reduced visibility in the near term, but it could influence how aggressively the company and its regional operators pursue new store openings or promotional investment going forward. Any recalibration in capital allocation tied to softer overseas performance would be watched closely by franchise partners and commercial landlords in the Gulf, given how deeply integrated coffee chains have become in the region’s retail and hospitality landscape.

The mixed results also feed into a broader narrative being tracked across the business world, as global consumer companies navigate uneven recovery patterns between their home markets and international operations. Investors will likely scrutinise upcoming guidance from Starbucks management for clues on whether the U.S. turnaround can be replicated abroad, and whether Gulf markets—long seen as a reliable source of growth for Western food and beverage brands—will regain momentum in the company’s international segment. Until clearer signals emerge, the divergence between a strengthening U.S. business and a softer international one is expected to remain a focal point for analysts assessing Starbucks’ next moves, including any potential adjustments to its footprint or strategy across the Middle East.
