Chery and Abu Dhabi’s K2 eye UAE robotaxi market entry

UAE robotaxi market

Chinese automaker Chery is eyeing a spot in the UAE’s driverless taxi race, and it’s teaming up with Abu Dhabi-based K2 to try to get there. If this goes through, it could mean more autonomous cars on UAE roads sooner than you think.

Chery Auto says it will unveil a purpose-built Level 4 autonomous robotaxi and sign a strategic cooperation agreement with K2 at its International User Summit in Wuhu, China, this week. Level 4 is the technical term for a self-driving vehicle that can handle most driving situations on its own, without a human needing to take over, within a defined area or set of conditions.

Why the UAE robotaxi market keeps attracting global players

The UAE has been pushing hard to position itself as a testing ground for autonomous mobility. International tech firms and automakers have already poured investment and partnerships into the country’s self-driving ambitions, and this isn’t happening by accident.

The country’s ports, free zones and regulatory sandboxes have made it a convenient launchpad for companies that want to trial new transport tech before rolling it out elsewhere. For Chery, a tie-up with K2 could be exactly that kind of entry point into the UAE market.

K2 isn’t new to this space either. The company has already struck a separate partnership with Chinese mobility firm CaoCao, aimed at pushing robotaxi deployment forward in the UAE. That means K2 is quietly building up a network of partners, each bringing their own piece of the self-driving puzzle, from vehicle hardware to software to operational know-how.

For everyday residents, this matters because it signals where the country’s transport future might be headed. If autonomous taxis become a regular sight on UAE streets, it could reshape how people commute, how much they spend on getting around, and even how cities plan their roads. For investors and entrepreneurs watching the business landscape here, it’s another sign that mobility tech remains one of the hottest sectors in the region right now.

What happens next for Chery, K2 and the UAE’s driverless ambitions

Right now, the Chery-K2 agreement is still at the “planned” stage. Nothing has been finalised, and the real test will be whether this proposed partnership actually turns into a working commercial programme on UAE roads.

That’s an important distinction. Plenty of companies sign cooperation agreements and showcase flashy prototypes at summits, but turning that into real robotaxis picking up real passengers is a much bigger step. It involves regulatory approval, safety testing, infrastructure readiness, and public trust, all of which take time.

Still, the fact that Chery is choosing to showcase its Level 4 robotaxi specifically alongside a UAE-focused agreement suggests the company sees genuine opportunity here, not just a publicity moment. Chery is a major Chinese automaker, and its move into autonomous vehicle technology mirrors a broader trend of Chinese companies expanding aggressively into Gulf markets, whether in electric vehicles, renewable energy or now driverless transport.

K2, for its part, is positioning itself as a connector between international autonomous vehicle makers and the UAE market. With CaoCao already on board and Chery potentially joining soon, K2 is stacking up partnerships that could make it a central player if and when robotaxis become commercially available here.

For now, the summit in Wuhu, China, this week will be the moment to watch. That’s where Chery plans to formally sign the deal and show off its robotaxi technology to the world. Whether that translates into test vehicles on Abu Dhabi or Dubai streets anytime soon remains an open question, according to Arabian Business.

What to watch next: whether the agreement between Chery and K2 is formally signed this week, and if so, how quickly it moves from paper to pilot. Given the UAE’s track record of fast-tracking emerging transport tech, any update here could come sooner rather than later. For now, residents and investors alike should keep an eye on official announcements from both companies as the summit unfolds.
