UAE Eyes 50% Local Crops, Sharjah Hits 93% Waste Recycling

Reading Time: 3 mins read
UAE local crop production food security

The UAE wants half of its food grown on home soil, and Sharjah is already turning almost all its trash into something useful instead of landfill. These two numbers came out of the Sharjah Investment Forum (SIF 2026), and together they point to a growing pile of business opportunities in food security and sustainability that UAE and GCC investors should be watching closely.

During a session called “Growing a Sustainable Future” at SIF 2026, government officials and business leaders laid out the targets plainly. The UAE aims to produce 50 percent of its crops locally. Sharjah, meanwhile, has already managed to divert 93 percent of its waste away from landfills. These aren’t small achievements. For a region known more for importing food than growing it, and for generating a lot of waste in a short span of rapid development, these figures mark a real shift in direction.

Why food security in the UAE and GCC is suddenly a hot investment theme

Food security has always mattered in the Gulf, given the region’s reliance on imported produce. But the push toward growing half of all crops locally changes the conversation from “how do we secure supply” to “how do we build the industry that makes that happen.” That’s where investors come in.

The discussion at SIF 2026 specifically flagged agricultural technology, artificial intelligence, and resource management as the areas where new money and new ideas are needed. Think vertical farms, smart irrigation systems, AI-driven crop monitoring, and water-saving tech suited to a hot, dry climate. These aren’t niche experiments anymore. They’re becoming central to how the UAE plans to feed itself.

For entrepreneurs and companies working in agtech, this is a signal worth paying attention to. A government target like “50 percent local crops” doesn’t get set without policy support, funding incentives, and partnerships following behind it. If you’re building or scaling a business in this space, the UAE is clearly positioning itself as a place where that work gets backed.

Sharjah’s 93% waste diversion: a model other emirates could copy

The waste number out of Sharjah is just as striking. Diverting 93 percent of waste from landfills is a high bar, and it shows that resource management in the emirate has moved well beyond basic recycling bins. It points to serious infrastructure and planning behind the scenes, turning what used to be a disposal problem into a resource stream.

This matters for investors because waste management, when done at this scale, isn’t just an environmental checkbox. It becomes a sector in its own right, covering recycling technology, waste-to-energy systems, and the resource management services needed to keep a 93 percent diversion rate running smoothly. Sharjah’s results, shared publicly at SIF 2026, suggest the emirate sees this as something to showcase, not just maintain quietly.

Both the food security target and the waste achievement were part of the same conversation at the forum, and that pairing isn’t a coincidence. Agricultural technology and resource management often overlap, especially when it comes to turning organic waste into compost or energy that can support local farming. The UAE’s approach seems to be treating sustainability as one connected system rather than separate boxes to tick.

For readers tracking investment news in the UAE and wider GCC, this session is a useful marker. It shows where government attention and, likely, funding support are heading next. Agtech, AI applications in farming, and waste resource management are being named directly as areas open for investment, not just mentioned in passing. That’s a clearer signal than most.

What to watch next: how quickly the UAE moves from setting the 50 percent local crop target to funding the specific projects that get it there, and whether other emirates start publishing their own waste diversion numbers to match or beat Sharjah’s 93 percent. Details on this were shared by WAM, and more specifics on funding, timelines or named projects would be the next thing to look for.
