Physical publisher raises alarm over Sony’s disc decision

Sony PlayStation disc discontinuation

PM Studios, a Las Vegas-based publisher known for bringing niche and cult titles to physical shelves, has described Sony’s move to discontinue PlayStation disc manufacturing as “sad and devastating” for companies that still depend on boxed games to reach players. The company, which has spent roughly two decades building a business around producing discs and cartridges for franchises such as the Korean rhythm-action series DJMax, said the change threatens a core part of how it operates.

The concern was first reported in an article titled “It’s sad and devastating” – Black Myth: Wukong’s physical publisher is mourning the loss of PlayStation discs, which detailed how PM Studios has been left grappling with the implications of Sony winding down disc production. Among the titles caught up in the fallout is Black Myth: Wukong, the breakout action title that became one of the most talked-about releases in recent years. PM Studios had been responsible for handling the physical PlayStation distribution of the game, meaning the discontinuation directly affects one of its higher-profile projects rather than only smaller catalogue titles.

A shrinking niche in a digital-first industry

For PM Studios, physical publishing has remained a viable, if increasingly specialised, revenue stream even as much of the broader industry pushes consumers toward digital storefronts and streaming-style access to libraries. The company’s business model has relied on collectors, importers and fans of specific genres who continue to seek out discs and cartridges rather than downloads. Sony’s decision to phase out disc manufacturing removes a key piece of infrastructure that smaller publishers have used to serve that audience, and it raises questions about how such companies will adapt their supply chains going forward.

The move is emblematic of a wider shift playing out across the gaming industry, where major platform holders have steadily scaled back investment in physical media in favour of digital sales, which typically carry lower distribution costs and higher margins. While this transition has been underway for years, the discontinuation of PlayStation disc production marks a more concrete step that directly affects publishers still built around physical releases, rather than simply reflecting a gradual decline in consumer demand.

There is no indication that any UAE or wider Gulf-based publisher is directly involved in the dispute, and the immediate impact is centred on PM Studios’ operations in the United States. However, the change carries knock-on relevance for the region. Physical retail gaming continues to hold a notable presence in the UAE and across the GCC, where collectors, retailers and players in areas with inconsistent broadband access have long favoured boxed copies over downloads. Any disruption to global disc manufacturing and distribution chains could eventually affect the availability and pricing of physical PlayStation titles reaching Gulf retailers, even though the underlying decision originates far from the region.

As digital distribution continues to consolidate its dominance, smaller publishers reliant on physical formats may face growing pressure to rework their business models, a shift that could gradually alter how games are sold to physical-media enthusiasts in markets, including the Gulf, that have historically resisted a fully digital transition.
