DUBAI — Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 8, expected to launch later this year with an upgraded hinge, thinner profile and improved multitasking software, is setting a high bar for Apple’s rumoured foldable iPhone, with UAE electronics retailers and telecom operators already positioning for what analysts describe as the most competitive year yet in the premium foldable segment.

Foldable Demand Building Across the Gulf

Counterpoint Research projects global foldable smartphone shipments will grow 21% year-on-year in 2026, with Apple’s entry expected to capture roughly 25% of that market once it ships. The UAE, alongside Saudi Arabia, remains one of the highest per-capita markets for premium smartphones globally, and du and Etisalat by e& have both expanded foldable device financing and trade-in programmes ahead of anticipated demand. Samsung currently holds the dominant share of Gulf foldable sales, and features tipped for the Z Fold 8 — including a lighter titanium-reinforced frame, improved crease reduction and deeper AI integration for productivity tasks — are seen as difficult for a first-generation iPhone Ultra Fold to match immediately. For UAE retailers such as Sharaf DG, Jumbo Electronics and Virgin Megastore, the arrival of two flagship foldables in close succession is expected to lift average transaction values across the premium device category through the first half of next year.

Implications for UAE Investors and Distributors

For investors tracking consumer electronics distribution and telecom retail in the region, the intensifying foldable rivalry signals a longer replacement cycle disruption than standard smartphone launches typically generate. Businesses reliant on device leasing, insurance and after-sales servicing — a growing niche among UAE fintech and telecom adjacent startups — stand to benefit from higher-value hardware entering the market. Free zone-based distributors handling re-export to wider GCC and African markets will also be watching component supply chains closely, given Apple’s foldable is expected to lean heavily on flexible display technology sourced from Korean suppliers already embedded in the UAE’s electronics import network. Analysts caution that pricing for Apple’s first foldable could exceed AED 8,000, positioning it firmly in the corporate and executive gifting segment favoured by Dubai and Abu Dhabi’s business community, rather than the mass consumer tier.
