Dad, engineer, dog lover, regional CEO. Derek Hird wears many hats and has seen a lot in his 25 years at DSI Underground, ground support for Sandvik Mining and Rock Solutions. Still, he feels the best is yet to come and looks forward to what the future holds.
It all started when the Australian native moved to Newcastle to study engineering at university. Part of an engineering degree required gaining industry experience, and since this town is full of mining and mining service companies, it was only natural that he started there.
His interest piqued and his mind challenged, Hird decided to stay after graduation and got a job at the same mining services company he had worked for as a student; the one that eventually became DSI Underground and his family far from home.
Now with a family of his own, a wife and three children, Hird emphasizes the same message he does at work: safety first, safety always. It\’s a mantra that has served him and the business well, and one he believes with all his heart.
